Digital marketing is a coverall term for a number of different kinds of marketing on the internet. This includes: paid-for advertising, organic sharing, the use of optimization in web content, email marketing, and more besides.
Anything that can get your brand noticed via the internet by a potential customer can be considered “digital marketing”.
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is a method of creating content for your website, social media, and other platforms that helps to increase your ranking on search engines (including Google). This can include using appropriate keywords, ensuring that your website is fast-loading, and creating content that is interesting and relevant.
Local SEO is the process of optimizing your content so that more visitors from a particular location are likely to be enticed to visit your site. Location-based searches will favor content that is optimized for locations that are nearby, helping customers to find the business when they are in the area.
Keywords are words or phrases that are directly related to the business you run. This could include services you provide, products for sale, your location, or even elements of questions that potential customers may have.
If your customers all live or work nearby, you might be tempted to think you don’t need to be on the internet at all. Most businesses are discovered by internet searches, so you could be cutting off a large proportion of customers if you DON’T have a website. Even if you have a brick-and-mortar store, customers would have to physically pass it to know you exist – with a web presence, they can find you wherever they are.
SEO is often primarily targeted for Google searches, as Google is the most popular search engine. However, where Google leads, others follow. Most search engines now expect the same kind of content and configuration as Google, so if your site ranks well on Google, it is more likely to rank well on other search engines too.
PPC (Pay Per Click) is a method of displaying ads (composed of text, photos, videos, or any combination thereof) on websites and search engines where the advertiser pays every time an ad receives a click.
The alternative is PPI (Pay Per Impression) which is, in most instances, an inferior method of promoting a business – there can be thousands of views/impressions with absolutely zero interaction from potential leads. (We say “in most instances” because PPI can prove useful for branding campaigns in which the advertiser only wishes to be seen/known. The average local businesses generally won’t utilize such tactics.)
PPC can be superior in that the advertiser is only charged when a customer expresses interest in their products or services.
No, top rankings can be achieved with SEO in the organic results. PPC provides an instant hit of interest – campaigns can be set up quickly and customers can be sent to your site within hours of the campaign starting. This is beneficial if your business needs a boost, if you are promoting a special event or price, or if you are a new business that hasn’t had time to build trust with a long-standing website.
Content marketing is the process of creating or sharing content for your website, blog, or social media that is interesting enough to draw in new followers and result in shares of that content. This will spread your influence further resulting in greater brand awareness and potentially higher sales.
Search Engine Marketing, or SEM, is a method of increasing the visibility of websites in search engine results. The most common way is with the use of PPC advertising (or similar). This helps customers to discover your business quickly without having to wait for organic search results to be updated.
Email marketing is a method of promoting your business, services, or products by the use of regularly scheduled emails containing relevant information and promotional content. It is sent to interested parties, rather than distributed to a random selection of emails addresses, which is considered spam. Spam messages rarely get seen, whereas properly constructed email marketing campaigns will quickly and easily boost sales and interest.
With PPC campaigns, results can be seen within hours of the campaign launching. Visitors will arrive at your site as the adverts will be clearly visible and relevant to their searches or interests.
With other methods, such as content marketing, it may take several weeks before enough trust is built in your brand to entice customers to take action.
With email marketing, responses can occur within minutes of sending out an email.
With on-site and off-site SEO, it’s generally thought to take no less than 3 months to begin to see results in places like Google and Bing.
And, with different markets, the amount of time taken may vary more still, as some markets are more responsive than others.
